What's On
Sundays; 7.30pm; £6/5 according to pocket
There have been poetry readings on Sunday nights at Torriano Meeting House since 1982. As well as the evening’s main readers invited from a broad range of literary practice, there are usually a number of ‘poets from the floor’, who may include full-time poets and also beginners presenting a piece in public for the first time. The range has spanned Stephen Spender and John Heath-Stubbs to Labi Siffre and John Hegley.
The publishers Hearing Eye was born from the Sunday readings and has its base at Torriano.
Generally exhibitions can be seen during events and performances or by arrangement.
We welcome and accommodate work of all forms - previously we have hosted a giant ziggurat taking up a third of the room; installations; twig sculptures; ceramics; paintings; mobiles; projections.
Torriano Meeting House has excellent acoustics and a piano. We have hosted a range of acoustic music including Bheki Mseleku playing jazz piano, Iraqi oud jams, practise space for opera singers, music lessons... Come and use the space but be mindful we have residential neighbours.
Torriano is the current residence of Unity Folk Club.
Torriano Meeting House hosts plays, puppetry, film screenings and is used as a rehearsal space.
Our resident theatre company is The New Factory of the Eccentric Actor.
Torriano Meeting House was made for meetings! Excellent acoustics, no need for amplification. Seats up to 40.
Some events are spontaneous.
A Fun Palace is the best way to describe this. The Principle of a Fun Palace is to invite the neighbours in. And because culture is what happens when people come together, a Fun Palace becomes.
TMH has operated this way over the last 40 years: nurturing, cross pollination and trust in the vital force of community, and an “Anything goes” approach. If there’s any way to have a healthy and better society, it’s to have Fun Palaces every day for 365 days…. everything we need is inside us.
London’s liveliest storytelling for adults, hosted by Nell Phoenix.
Professional storytellers headline the evenings – these tellers are the best in the UK and beyond. They tour nationally and internationally, performing at festivals, clubs and theatres such as the Barbican, the Globe and the South Bank…
And then they come to us, to our intimate, candle-lit space to spellbind us with epics, myths, legends and folktales. They love us because we are at the grassroots of the storytelling revival, we have a fun and friendly crowd and the best listening ears!!
At StoryNight, storytelling is a traditional yet totally contemporary performance art.
A new era of avantgarde, experimental, very old and socially important films are being shown at Torriano by the film makers.
